History
From the day James first heard about Starfleet in history class at school, he wanted to be a security officer. After all, his dad was a police officer for Earth, so why shouldn’t he do the same thing in Starfleet. Every day, after his dad got home, James would ask about being a security officer, constantly asking questions about how things were done and why they were always done a certain way. Of course, most of it barely made sense to the young man, until he managed to be accepted into Starfleet Academy.
That first year in the Academy, while James was taking all of the basic classes required of all cadets, he nearly failed out due to his over-confidence in his own learning. He was hard-headed, and had to learn the hard way to find other solutions to problems, instead of using what he’d learned from his father, both directly and in holosuite programs.
The second year, having barely escaped academic dismissal, James became almost a workaholic in his pursuit of his dream, to be the best possible security officer in the Fleet. During that year and the following two, all he focused on were security-related classes, especially weapons training, investigative procedures, and anti-boarding procedures. His performance in the Kobyashi Maru test was middle-of-the-pack, nothing spectacular.
He graduated in 2378 in the top 10% of his class due to his intense focus on his chosen field, though he missed being even higher due to his first year grades as well as his constant lack of focus on anything outside of security and his mediocre performance on the Kobyashi Maru.
His first assignment was the USS Endeavor, where he served without distinction for two years before being promoted to Lt (j.g) and reassigned to the USS Darwin. Again, this was an undistinguished tour, though James was constantly working on his security measures, honing his previous skills and working on counter-intelligence skills as well, something that he’d noticed in his studies on history that were always critical, especially during the Dominion War and any time the Romulans were active and not friendly toward the Federation.
When hearing about the USS Wild Card needing a security officer, James ‘threw his hat into the ring’, and let fate go as it wished. On the same day that he received his Lt Commander pip, he got his orders assigning him to the Wild Card….
